Cody Wilson, a University of Texas law student & founder of Defense Distributed, recently released blue prints for the first 3D-printable handgun. Anyone with an internet connection and access to a 3D printer can make one.
A bit scary, right? Well, the US State Department demanded that Cody take down the blueprints within one week of posting.
Whew, what a relief... Except, it's still extremely easy to get a real gun.
Reporter Hilary Andersson recently went undercover at a Texas gun show & walked out with an AR15 assault riffle with no background checks. As I previously posted, the US Senate recently rejected a plan to require background checks for online & trade show gun purchases. If she wanted to, Hilary Andersson could basically build her own militia.
In summary, the US government has decided:
- Printing 3D guns: Not OK
- Buying AR15s with no background check: Woohoo!! (with guns blazing, get it?)
Personally, I'm more worried about someone buying a a real AR15 than I am about someone printing a 3D gun. Seems pretty inconsistent to me.
PS - And, for another day, I'm really happy that the US has cracked down on carry-on toiletries. I'm sure my extra large shampoo is a bigger security threat than the 300M guns hanging out in the hands of US civilians.
